Love the weekend

The weekend...a time to unwind,  when the daily routine of school and homework and responsibility all vanish and we are able to set our own pace and catch up on conversations and moments which sometimes seem to blurr during the hustle and bustle of the week.

It was another amazing weekend in Saigon. We got together with friends for a family play date hosted by Laurel and Herb (or as Veronika would say "Mr. Erb" - love the French influence...the silent  H. ..still makes me laugh when I think about it) at LaCasa. There were 14 kids, playing and swimming...such a relaxing day, we spent the afternoon talking about travels,  home, the decision to move our families half way around the world to Vietnam, the craziness of our departures and the adventures of settling in. It's amazing how it is possible to bond with people in a relatively short time.

Laurel had beautiful and delicious cakes for everyone for dessert after lunch.

Halloween cookie treats!

Sunday, Veronika, David and I went to Ben Than Market with Felicia and her daughter Nimmue. Viktor was actually still sleeping when we left the house. ..pooped from the pool party on Sat! Eva and Viktor spent the morning with Stepan swimming at our pool and playing in the park.

Bến Thành Market (Vietnamese: Chợ Bến Thành) is a large marketplace in central Hồ Chí Minh City, Vietnam in District 1. The market is one of the earliest surviving structures in Saigon and an important symbol of Hồ Chí Minh City, popular with tourists seeking local handicrafts, textiles, áo dài and souvenirs, as well as local cuisine. - Wikipedia

We've been to Ben Thanh several times and it is a place where you can get lost for hours eating and shopping.  The only downside is that due to the fact that it is frequented by tourists, I find that prices are higher than at our local Tan My Market in district 7,  and it takes a fair bit of haggling to get prices to where they should be ( but there are a lot of unique tourity things to be found there and the sheer vastness of the market is well worth the visit).

Mid morning snack of noodles and soup.

I tried a local dessert/refreshing drink...not sure what it's called and all the ingredients in it but it was really good.  Not too sweet....with a combination of beans and a variety of jellies and pulps with shaved ice and some rice milk??? That's my guess anyway.  The teas Ive tried here are all so delicious. All are iced, but with subtle differences in taste.  I think my favorite so far is lotus tea.  I loved this one so much,  I bought a whole bag to brew at home.

On our way back to the bus we stopped at Fanny's for some homemade ice cream. We shared a plate of 14 icecream flavours and a chocolate fruit  fondue.  Expensive but delish! A real treat!
We also finished off preparations for our Halloween costumes.  It was fun checking out the various shops filled with quirky things and trinkets.
Everyone is looking forward to dressing up next weekend! Halloween is not traditionally celebrated in Vietnam, but with our Canadian friends and our Canadian school, we have some activities and trick or treating planned,  so we will have a fun week ahead.
